5 Safety Tips For Your Pets On Memorial Day

Memorial Day is a time for remembrance and honoring those who have served our country. It’s also the unofficial start of summer, which means it’s time for outdoor activities and fun in the sun. But as the temperatures rise in Charleston, it’s important to think about pet safety and remember how the heat can affect our furry friends.

Here are some tips for keeping your pets safe and happy on Memorial Day and throughout the hot summer months in Charleston.

1. Stay hydrated:

Just like humans, pets need plenty of water to stay hydrated in the heat. Make sure to provide fresh, clean water for your pets at all times, especially when spending time outdoors. Pro tip: keep a portable collapsible water bowl in your car so you can always have a bowl handy for your dog when you go on an adventure!

2. Limit exercise in the heat:

While it’s important for pets to get exercise, pet safety should always be considered. It’s best to limit strenuous activities during the hottest parts of the day. Opt for walks and playtime in the early morning or late evening when temperatures are cooler.

3. Provide shade and shelter:

If your pets are spending time outdoors, make sure they have access to shade and a cool, sheltered area to rest. This is especially important for pets with thick fur or short snouts, as they can overheat more easily.

4. Watch for signs of heatstroke:

Keep an eye out for signs of heatstroke in your pets, such as excessive panting, drooling, lethargy, and vomiting. If you notice these signs, seek veterinary attention immediately.

5. Always discuss a backup plan for your dog walker:

Discuss your pet safety plan with your dog walker so they know you’d prefer limited outdoor time with some play time inside, as well. Some pet parents opt for sprinkler or small pool playtime in the backyard. Be sure to update your account and communicate with your walker what your preference is for hotter days. Our team is trained to watch for signs of heat exhaustion and limit long walks and exercise, but it’s helpful to know the other options in place as well to ensure a fun and safe visit with your furry sweetie!
