Safety Tips for Road Trips with Fido

Can you believe it’s almost Thanksgiving?!  The holidays are just around the corner and that means lots of people will be hopping in the car to visit with family and friends.  If your pup or kitty tags along with you, there are lots of things you should think about before your trip.

  • Make sure your pooch is secure in the car. They make lots of cool things these days – doggie seat belts, safety harnesses, back seat barriers, hammocks, and tons more – so figure out which works best for your pal and keep them safe.  If you are in an accident, an unrestrained dog or cat can be thrown around the car and cause injury to themselves or you.
  • Does fido love to stick his head out the window? Keep his face safe. It may be adorable and seem like the most glorious thing in the world to them, but it can also be a bit dangerous. Think about all of those bugs that splatter on your windshield. Those can easily end up in your pups eyes or nose. It may seem silly, but a $10 pair of goggles can save you hundreds in eye surgery.
  • Get a microchip and ID Tags… just in case. You just never know what could happen and it’s better to be on the safe side. If your pup isn’t already microchiped, give your vet a call to see when you can have it done. Make sure your dog also has ID tags with your cell number on them. A pet should never be without tags when they are outside.
  • Don’t leave them alone in the car.  This is basic, but NEVER leave your dog or cat unattended in a car – especially on a hot or cold day.  This could be life threatening to your pooch or kitty within 15 minutes.
